Main Course: Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches
Servings: 4 servings
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes
Ingredients
- This is a take on a traditional Philly Cheese sandwich using simple ingredients you have at home.
- 3 teaspoons vegetable oil
- 1 pound (about 500 grams) beef cubes, diced into smaller pieces
- 1 medium onion, cut in half then thinly sliced
- 1 can (284 mL) sliced mushrooms, rinsed then well-drained
- 1 sweet pepper, thinly sliced
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon non-hydrogenated margarine or butter
- 1 ½ French baguette or 4 hamburger buns, preferably whole wheat
- 1 cup shredded cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions for Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400° F.
- Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a medium frying pan. Fast fry the beef stirring constantly until the beef turns colour, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
- In the same skillet, heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat. Cook the onions for 2 minutes, then stir in the mushrooms and peppers. Cook for another few minutes stirring often. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together the margarine or butter with the garlic powder until combined.
- If using baguette, cut it into 3 equal size pieces, then slice each piece lengthwise to make a sandwich. That means you will have about ½ a baguette leftover.
- Lay out the baguette or the buns on a baking sheet, cut side up. Spread a thin layer of the garlic margarine or butter on each piece of baguette or bun.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven for 5 minutes or until slightly toasted. Remove from the oven. Set aside the top of each baguette slice or bun.
- Layer the bottom of each baguette slice or bun with steak, followed by the vegetable mixture, and then top with cheese. Bake for another few minutes until cheese is melted.
- Take out of the oven and place the top of each baguette or bun to complete the sandwich. Enjoy!
